How Long Does It Take to Build an In-Ground Pool?

How long it takes to build an in-ground pool depends on several factors including the size of the pool, the type of pool, permitting, the complexity of the pool project, hardscape and landscape, the weather, and the ease or difficulty of digging the hole for the pool. However, for the sake of discussion if you assume you are putting in a standard-size, vinyl pool, during the sunny summer months, then you can figure it will take about a month.

Permitting

The speed of getting your permits depends on your jurisdiction. An experienced pool builder should be able to streamline this.

Ground

When digging for the pool, this job can be easy, difficult or very difficult depending on the substrate. In areas known for difficulty digging, sometimes excavation companies recommend digging a test hole to see what is in the ground. Pools can be built just about anywhere, but if the ground is solid rock, sometimes special digging equipment or even blasting is required.

Change Orders

One thing that can cause significant delays is when the client decides mid-project to make changes to the original agreed-upon project. Changing orders causes delays in any construction project.

Weather

Some parts of the project are weather dependent. Heavy rains or snow can cause delays in constructing and filling the pool. This is why pool builders are usually busiest during the middle of the summer.
